One of the key players in the development of the University of Ulster's Step Up to Science Programme has been awarded a National Teachers Award.

Martine Mulhern, Head of Science at St, Mary’s College, Derry, was given the accolade for ‘good practice, enthusiasm and dedication’ in the teaching of science.

Mrs Mulhern is a member of the Step Up Management Group and one of the main drivers in the development of Step Up programmes in the North West.

Step Up aims to help young people from areas of social and economic disadvantage to gain the necessary skills and qualifications for entry to university, through a programme of academic and vocational science activities.

Forty of St. Mary’s College sixth form pupils are currently participating in the programme and are hoping to emulate the success of former participants boasting a 100% pass rate and entry into high demand university courses such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Dr Damian O Kane, Director of the Step Up Programme, described Mrs Mulhern as ‘an inspirational science teacher who has added real value to pupils’ lives’.

“Mrs Mulhern has worked tirelessly to strengthen the partnership between the University and schools in the North-West. The quality and success of the Step-Up programme is due, in no small part, to the dedication and professionalism of Mrs Mulhern and her colleagues in our partner schools,” Dr O’Kane said.

She will be presented with the award from the Institute of Electrical Engineers at a celebration dinner in Birmingham on Friday, 28th November.
