Outstanding young athletes were recognised for their sporting achievements at a special award ceremony at the University of Ulster today.

The UU’s Sports Scholarship Scheme selects a number of students each year who are deserving of financial help and support services to assist them in maintaining sporting excellence during their time at the University.

Nine rising golf stars were awarded bursaries in connection with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. The other winners spanned eleven different sports including athletics and boxing, judo and GAA.

Dr Nigel Dobson, Head of Service, Student Support, said : "The University of Ulster places a high priority on sport and its development potential at all levels. Today has been a great opportunity to recognise the sporting prowess of students at the University through our Sports Scholarship and Golf Bursary Scheme.

“We are extremely proud to have so many outstanding young athletes at the University and we shall continue to develop our services and expertise to nurture and develop this rich pool of talent to its full potential"

Special guest speaker was World Blind Water Ski Champion Janet Gray MBE.
