Tyrone All-Ireland football winner Sean Cavanagh today finished off his academic year in typical style as he graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Accountancy. Sean took time out from his All-Ireland Qualifier preparations with the Tyrone Senior team to graduate today at the Waterfront Hall. The First Class Honours degree capped an outstanding year on and off the field for Sean who can now add his degree to his Ulster and All Ireland medals, Vodafone All Star and Young Player of the Year Awards and the Silver Salver Award for Outstanding Sportsperson awarded at the University’s recent Colours Ceremony. Sean is also a University of Ulster Sports Scholar. During his time at the University he represented the University in Freshers’ Football and in the Ryan and Sigerson Cup competitions. Sean was a leading member of the Tyrone team that won the All Ireland in September 2003 and he has also won National League, Ulster Minor, U-21 and Senior Championship medals as well as an All Ireland Minor Medal. A native of the Moy in Co Tyrone, Sean attended St Patrick’s College in Armagh and after achieving three A Grades in his A Levels, he chose to study Accountancy at Jordanstown. Sean said: “This is a brilliant end to my University career. Although it has been a busy year I am pleased that I have been able to balance study and football. I had a great time at Jordanstown - there's plenty of banter with the boys from other counties and great camaraderie.” Sean was one of 23 former and current UU footballers in last year's All Ireland Final. “I played along with a lot of them for Jordanstown,” he says “We are good friends off the pitch- that is one of the great things about the football team.” Sean is going to work in the Cavanagh Kelly Accountancy firm in Dungannon. Graduating along with Sean is classmate Daniel Hughes who plays for the Down Senior Football team. Graduation News 2004
