University of Ulster students partied last week with Holyland residents and members of Belfast’s Lower Ormeau and Botanic Environmental Association at a special Christmas celebration event.

Residents and students sang and line-danced the night away totop local entertainer Trevor Dixon at Friday’s party, held in the City Church on University Avenue.

The annual event was organised this year by student Paula Gunn as part of the University of Ulster’s community relations programme south Belfast’s studentland.

Paula, 21, from Teemore, Co Fermanagh, is reading for a degree in Communication, Advertising and Marketing at the UU’s Jordanstown campus.

She is currently on placement as an intern in the University’s Department of Public Affairs.

Said Paula: "As a student living in the area, I appreciate how important it is to establish good relations with local residents. The pace of student life is very different to those of the general community, and it’s important for students to get to know residents, be good neighbours, and make a positive contribution to the everyday life of the area."

Local resident Councillor Rosaleen Hughes said: "We all had a great night. The residents really appreciate what the University has done in working with long term residents of the Holylands to improve community relations in the area - and it was nice to meet in the more relaxed setting of a Christmas party."
