Business Leaders 'Show The Way' to Future Marketing Graduates

25th November 2004

As part of the University’s adoption of Personal Development Planning (PDP) for students a range of key business leaders are to visit the School of Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Strategy.

Mark Durkin, Head of the School, said: "PDP is designed to foster a reflective perspective in students where they question what they are learning and develop a realisation of their potential through their programme of learning while at University. More important however is the development of a sense of possibility in students about ‘what can be’ upon graduation as a result of their studies."

The ‘Shine’ Workshop will run on Friday 26 November for first and second year students on the highly successful BSc Hons Marketing programme offered by the School.

The business leaders who will address the 70 students include CEO of Propertynews.com, Professor Conor MacCarrick, and Regional Director for the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Mr Michael Maguire.

Conor MacCarrick, who was formerly Group Marketing Director with Bank of Ireland, said: ‘It is such an exciting invitation to take part in this day. As an employer it is wonderful to have an opportunity to share over 30 years of my marketing experiences with these students, to show them by example what a fantastic career awaits them and it is a privilege to have an input into shaping their thinking about the great subject they are learning. I will be emphasising that they need to realise the importance of always seeing what is possible and of turning learning into doing.’

Michael Maguire added: ‘The BSc Marketing is a great programme. Often in our culture it is unfashionable to celebrate such excellence. We become embarrassed and feel uncomfortable about such celebration. Marketing graduates of the future must become more conscious of what they have learned, the currency of that learning, exchange rate for that currency and the real value of their University experience! That is certainly something to celebrate!’

Mark Durkin said, “The School will be holding these events regularly and will alternate speakers drawn from our resident Business Advisory Forum as we move forward.”
