Students Back Road Safety Campaign

29th November 2004

Student leaders at Jordanstown are giving their friends and colleagues a graphic road-safety message in the run-up to Christmas.

Students' Union officers have placed a wrecked car at an entrance to the university’s campus as a compelling warning about what could happen.

"Our roads are becoming more and more dangerous every day and more young people are being seriously injured or killed. With the help of Professor Alan Woodside, who is professor of highway engineering, and researcher Jonathan Seymour, the Students Union has placed the vehicle at the campus to make students aware of the dangers of the road," said Conal Duffy, Site Vice-President, Jordanstown.

"Around the same time last year we put on a similar display at Jordanstown and it seemed to hit home with a lot of students, and perhaps clued them up on just what can happen when a car is driven recklessly.

"This car - which isn’t one that was involved in a fatal accident - is there to highlight the need to drive safely and to be aware of not travelling in a vehicle that’s being driven by someone you suspect has been drinking or who you know is liable to take chances."
