Springboard for Success

14th December 2004

Andrew Coulter, 22, will be feeling on top of the world today - he is the first member of his family to receive a degree, and all his family have promised to come to see him graduate as a Bachelor of Science.

The East Belfast student’s four years at the University of Ulster have taken him to heights he once did not think possible.

As well as working hard for a BSc Hons degree in Applied Biochemical Sciences, Andrew has played hard - becoming one of the University’s Sports Scholars, and reaching the rank of world number two in his chosen sport of trampolining and gymnastics.

The Sports Scholar scheme recognizes the achievement of the University’s top student athletes and supports them financially and through special fitness and dietary advice.

Although Andrew he has now retired from international competition, he continues to run the UU trampolining club, and remains involved in coaching both in Northern Ireland and in England.

As part of his degree, Andrew also completed a year-long placement in the University’s cancer research labs, which has given him the advanced laboratory skills that he hopes will enable him to build a career in cancer research in Northern Ireland.
