UU Unveils Summer Honorary Graduates

The University of Ulster today unveiled its list of honorary graduates for the summer 2005 ceremonies.

The list is headed by The Rt Hon Chris Patten, last Governor of Hong Kong, Chairman of the Independent Commission on Policing which recommended radical policing reform in Northern Ireland, and Chancellor of the universities of Oxford and Newcastle. He is to receive the degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt), in recognition of his contribution to public life and education.

He joins an array of distinguished figures from the worlds of business, medicine, academia, media and public life who are to be honoured for their contribution to excellence in their chosen fields of endeavour.

  • Denis Bradley will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his contribution to policy and local community issues in Northern Ireland. A former priest, he was appointed deputy chairman of the NI Policing Board on its formation. He has been deeply involved in community relations work for many years.
     
  • Wendy Austin, BBCNI anchorwoman, will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) for her contribution to broadcasting. One of Northern Irelandís best-known journalists, Wendy is a presenter of Radio Ulsterís agenda-setting flagship current affairs programme, Good Morning Ulster.
     
  • Beverly Malone, General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) for her leadership of the UKís largest nursing body, the Royal College of Nursing.
     
  • Max OíBrien, trade unionist and disability rights campaigner, will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv), in recognition of his contribution to education.
     
  • Baroness Mary Warnock, crossbench peer, moral philosopher and Chairperson, Committee of Enquiry Human Fertilisation and Embryology will receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv), for her outstanding contributions to philosophy and education.
     
  • Dame Joan Harbison, Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission will be presented with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) for her contribution to public life in Northern Ireland.
     
  • Kevin Lagan will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) for his contribution to business activities in Northern Ireland.
     
  • Molly Corbett Broad will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) for her contribution to education. She has served as President of the 16-campus University of North Carolina since July 1997.
     
  • H Martin Lancaster President of the North Carolina Community College System will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) for his outstanding contribution to education.
     
  • Professor Susan McKenna-Lawlor of the Department of Experimental Physics at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) for her contribution to astrophysics.
     
  • George Moore, Chief Executive Officer of TARGUSinfo will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) for his contribution to business activities at an international level.
     
  • Philip C Haughey, President of The Haughey Company in Boston, will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) for his contribution to business activities and support for philanthropic organisations.
     
  • Mr Billie Vincent President of the Ireland Fund (Monaco) and Vice-Chairman of the International Ireland Funds, is to receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) for outstanding contributions to and support for philanthropic organisations.

The University of Ulster graduation ceremonies begin at Coleraine on 27 June, and conclude at the Millennium Forum on 6 July.
