e-Learning Expansion at UU

11th April 2005

The University of Ulster today unveils three innovative postgraduate programmes in social research skills. Delivered by distance learning, they will be offered through the University’s Campus One from October 2005.

The part-time programmes have been developed by the School of Policy Studies and, according to Course Director Professor Sile O’Connor from the Magee campus, because they will be delivered through e-learning, the programmes will be particularly suited to people who need maximum flexibility in time and place of access to learning opportunities.

“The structure, content and mode of delivery make them unique not only in Ireland but in the UK,” adds Professor O’Connor.

As well as a core of research and evaluation modules, the suite of courses offers three specialist options.  These options - Researching Social Inequality and Exclusion; Voluntary Action Studies; and Peace and Conflict Research in Divided Societies - draw on areas of research expertise within the School of Policy Studies.

Three different programmes will be offered:  Postgraduate Certificate in Social Research Skills; Postgraduate Diploma in Social Research Skills with Specialisms; and MSc in Social Research Skills with Specialisms. In addition, taught modules may be taken as accredited short courses.

The programmes are directed towards people keen to develop skills in: carrying out research projects from the design to write-up stage; critically appraising published and commissioned research; and commissioning appropriate research and evaluation studies.

The key target groups are social science graduates employed in the public, private and voluntary sectors and individuals outside of these sectors who may wish to update and develop their skills.

“There has a very positive response to the proposed programmes from the public, voluntary and private sectors. We are delighted by the high level of interest shown in all three programmes,” says Professor O’Connor.
