BT Prize for Advanced MSc Course at UU

BT Northern Ireland in conjunction with the University of Ulster has established an annual prize for the best overall student performance on the Advanced MSc in Telecommunications and Internet Systems course at the University of Ulster, Coleraine campus.

The prize will be awarded after the students complete their MSc Project. Commenting on this award Bill Murphy, Managing Director BT Regions and CEO BT in Ireland stated that he was delighted to have BT associated with excellence as demonstrated by the quality of research and teaching that underpins graduates that emerge from this unique course.

"The MSc in Telecommunications and Internet Systems teaches industrially relevant material on a suite of related areas, including Advanced Network Management, Distributed Systems, High-speed Networking, Research Methods, Network Simulation, SDH/ATM Transport, Intelligent Systems, Multimedia, Mobile Agents, Client-server Protocols and Middleware Applications Development " said Bill.

“This type of material is fundamental to sustaining and growing the ICT sector in the UK and Ireland and is of particular relevance to the needs of BT now and in the future. We are committed to creating a leading global networked economy and we are driving this through investment in technology, services, products and people.”

Professor Gerard Parr, who holds the Chair in Telecommunications Engineering at Coleraine stated: "I am delighted that this year BT, through Marcus Porter, who is responsible for the 21st Century Network rollout in Northern Ireland and his team are also sponsoring several advanced MSc projects in the area ofDSL and future bandwidth requirements and WiMAX technology in the access network.”

“We plan to build upon this relationship with BT who were instrumental in helping the University develop this course. The relationship with BT is fundamental to ensuring that our course meets the needs of local industry and offers employment opportunities to our graduates in a highly competitive environment."

The MSc in Telecommunications and Internet Technologies is the only course of its kind on the island of Ireland and offers a great opportunity to gain technical skills with positive job prospects through providing an in-depth knowledge of the telecommunications sector.

Applicants are expected to have a first or second class Honours degree in Computing Science/Electrical Engineering or related discipline with competent programming skills: applicants without these requirements but with considerable relevant industrial experience may also be considered.

The course can be undertaken in one year, full time, or over three years on a part time basis. Already students from Jordan, Thailand, USA, Ireland, UK, India, China and Hong Kong have undergone or are on the course and overseas students are particularly welcome as they bring their highly relevant global experience. A number of successful graduates have progressed from this course and been awarded 3-year scholarships to commence PhD research in topics which include Mobile Communications, GRID Computing and High-Speed Network Management or they have secured excellent positions in the ICT industry. The course team have good links with the worldwide telecommunications industry, Asidua, BT, Ericsson, Vodafone, Fujitsu, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, NTT and China Telecom which offers unparalleled opportunities in these worldclass companies.
