UU Holds 7th Hong Kong Graduation Ceremony

Ninety students and two distinguished academics received degrees at the University’s graduation ceremony in Hong Kong this weekend.

The ceremony – the seventh to be held in the city by the University – was presided over by the Chancellor, Sir Richard Nichols, Guest of Honour and keynote speaker was Angela Smith MP, whose responsibilities include the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI), the Department of Education (DE) and the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL).

During her keynote address, the Minister paid tribute to the work of the University in developing links between Northern Ireland and Hong Kong,  “ I would like to congratulate the University of Ulster and its partner organisations here in Hong Kong for their contribution to international collaboration and the development of mutually beneficial relationships.

“The increased globalisation of economies, trade and services has turned higher education into a first necessity for all countries to enable them to successfully meet their challenges”

The University has built strong relationships with its partners in Hong Kong and China over the past two decades Already, there are over 1,000 alumni of the University in the region

Two of Hong Kong’s most distinguished academics - Mr. Chan Cheuk-hay and Professor Enoch CM Young received the degree of  Doctor of Letters (DLitt) at the ceremony in Kowloon’s Harbour Plaza Hotel. The honours were conferred in recognition of their contributions to higher education and lifelong learning.

Mr. Chan is the President and Principal of Hong Kong College of Technology and is also a member of a number of public bodies with responsibility for adult and lifelong education.

Professor Young is the Director of the School of Professional and Continuing Education, The University of Hong Kong and is and has been a member of many Government and non–Governmental committees and councils which serve the interests of Further and Higher education in Hong Kong.

Earlier in the week, 45 UU undergraduate and postgraduate students received degrees in business and public administration at a special graduation ceremony held in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province in north-eastern China.
