UUJ’s men’s volleyball team are the Irish Intervarsities champions after an astonishing victory romp in the tournament.

They clinched the title without dropping a single set in their six matches in Galway.

Victories in group stages over Athlone IT, Waterford IT, Trinity College Dublin and the University of Limerick led to a semi-final clash against University College Dublin and then the final against Waterford IT.

Power-packed hitting and excellent setting throughout the tournament saw the UUJ team emulate Queens University Belfast who lifted the men’s trophy last year.

The team’s victory recalls the halcyon days of the 1990s when UU sides won the men’s competition for seven consecutive years.

The UUJ triumph came on the back of the side’s best ever season. They currently top the Northern Ireland 1^st Division and earlier this year competed for the first time ever in the European Top Teams Cup, beating Luxembourg opponents in the first round.

That made them the first ever Irish club to taste success in a top European competition.
