What causes the revolutionary, history-changing sound of the rock guitar and how does it help us understand the nature of the entire universe?

FameLab 2005 winner, Dr Mark Lewney, will explain the physics of rock using riffs from Vivaldi to Queen from his custom Ibanez guitar at a public lecture in the University’s Coleraine campus.

Dr Lewney will reveal the secret of the Stradivarius and show how string vibrations might lie at the heart of the answers to the Big Questions about the Big Bang and the dimensions of the universe.

The Physics of Rock Guitar: Strats, Srads and Superstrings – is the third in a series of Science and Society lectures sponsored by the Bank of Ireland and organised by UU to help bring science to life.

The lecture takes place on Tuesday 6 December at 7.30pm in lecture theatre 7, Coleraine campus.
