UU Clinic Helps NI Commonwealth Games Team Gear Up for Melbourne

Phil Glasgow from the Sports Institute with gold medalist David Calvert
Physiotherapists from the UU Clinic in partnership with the Sports Institute will be helping the Northern Ireland team reach peak fitness for the Commonwealth Games 2006.
Thirty members of the squad, covering badminton, bowls, cycling, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, squash, table tennis and triathlon will undergo Performance Enhancement Screens at the University Clinic.
The screens will help assess each athlete’s level of fitness and their ability to perform at the highest level in the 2006 games, due to be held in Melbourne, Australia.
As well as assessing fitness, the screen will also be used to identify weak muscles, tight muscles, injury-prone structures and aid recovery time.
UU Clinic Manager, John Carruthers said: “The primary aim for athletes following Performance Enhancement Screening is to improve on their range of motion and the elimination of potential injuries. As the athletes step up training prior to the games they can use the information provided from the screen together with their strength and conditioning coaching to improve on the areas identified.”
The Clinic is currently screening the University’s Sports Scholars and Golf Bursars as well as the Northern Ireland under-17 football team. The information will be used by the University’s High Performance Unit to provide strength and conditioning fitness schedule for the players.
