Dr Adrian Moore

Dr Adrian Moore, a prime mover in technology and knowledge transfer to industry today receives a Distinguished Research Fellowship from the University.

A senior lecturer in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Health Care Geography, he is managing director of Causeway Data Communications Ltd (CDC), one of the university’s most successful spin-out companies – which he founded in 1997.

Dr Moore, aged 42, is from Armagh and was educated at the Christian Brothers Grammar School in the city.  He studied geography at the University of Ulster in 1981, graduating in 1984, and then worked in industry as a production manager for three years. He graduated with an MSc Geography in 1988 and was awarded a PhD in 1993. He is a Chartered Geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Dr Moore joined UU as a lecturer in GIS in 1993 and has been a senior lecturer since 2000.  In addition, he has been MD of CDC Ltd since 2001, a role that illustrates his prominence as a promoter of technology link-ups between the university and the business sector. 

He has played a significant role in the commercial development of GIS regionally and nationally, particularly through his involvement as a director and elected member of the national council of the UK Association for Geographic Information (AGI), Chair of AGI Northern Ireland and member of the Implementation Board for the development of a GI strategy for Northern Ireland.

CDC produced the world’s first commercial GIS-based property valuation software which has been successfully sold into the UK, European, North American and South-East Asian markets. GIS is a term which describes a range of computerised techniques that involve the management and analysis of spatial data. It is, essentially, ‘intelligent computerised mapping’.

He is married to Aileen. They have three children, Sarah, Conor and Matthew and live in Portstewart.   “Personally, I am delighted to be a recipient of the award of Distinguished Business Fellowship of the University. In addition to it being a personal honour, I also consider this award to be recognition of the hard work, skill and dedication of all my colleagues in CDC Ltd.”
