News Release

Adam is King of the Game Boys

31st January 2006

College student Adam Stringer is the North West’s “King Gamer”.

His flying fingers earned him the title by a single point in a tense four man playoff.

The finalists took part in a networked Halo game set up on four large screens to publicise the launch of a new games degree at the University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus.

Adam, from the North Coast Integrated College, earned himself a Golden Ticket – one week’s free play at any of the GameTheWorld sites. GameTheWorld is a network game company based in the province.

He said: “I enjoyed the atmosphere at the university. It was brilliant. The big screens really brought the games to life”.

Runner-up was Michael Williams from Limavady College who received a limited edition Killer 7 games t-shirt supplied by David Wilson of Game in Craigavon.

The competition using the new Xbox 360 games console was organized by Dr Darryl Charles, a lecturer in computer science at the UU School of Computing and Information Engineering at Coleraine.

He said: “I am very pleased with the success of our game development series. It has proved popular with local school and college students and has helped reinforce our belief that computers games are a good context for engaging students in computing.”

The new games degree at Coleraine – BSc Computing (Digital Game Development) – is already proving a popular choice for entry students next year with UCAS applications being high for the first full year of a specialist degree.
