Sean Nós Meets The Blues at Magee

14th November 2006

The connections between traditional Irish narrative song and Country Blues will be explored and celebrated at a lunchtime concert at the Magee campus next week.

Actor and singer Mary Ryan, will perform an entertaining programme of unaccompanied songs in Gaeilge and Gaedhlig as well as Appalachian and Gospel Blues ballads, revealing the many musical and thematic similarities shared between the two traditions.

Mary said:  “The Blues has never made any apologies for the depth of emotion that underpins it, and neither has the Sean Nós singing tradition.  Both are rooted in places where there were few buffers against life’s tribulations.”

Mary, who has appeared in many film, TV and theatre productions, has recently returned from a tour of the Scottish Islands where she performed this mixture of Irish, Scottish and American Folk Blues to great acclaim.

The concert, which is part of the University’s ongoing Lunchtime Concert Series, will take place at 1.15pm on Tuesday 21 November in the Great Hall, Magee campus.

Tickets are £3 and are available on the door.  For further information please contact the Cultural Development Office on: 028 7137 5456.
