UU Presents Music For Midwinter

24th November 2006

The University of Ulster Choir and Orchestra will perform a popular mix of music in two concerts next month.

The ‘Music for Midwinter’ concerts, featuring music by Pachelbel, Mozart and Bernstein, will showcase the musical talents of staff, students and associated guest artists.

Led by the UU’s Musician-in-Residence, violinist Darragh Morgan, the Orchestra will open the concert with Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D.  This baroque favourite will be followed by a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 17 in G, with soloist Atsushi Tamura.  Atsushi is an award winning pianist and current PhD student at the Magee campus.

In the second half the University’s 70-strong choir will present Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in a version for choir, organ and solo voice. The piece, which will be sung in Hebrew, is a serene and affirmative setting from the Book of Psalms.

The concert will be directed by Cormac Newark and Shaun Ryan, music lecturers from the School of Creative Arts.

Concerts will take place at 8pm on Wednesday 6 December in the Octagon, University of Ulster, Coleraine campus and on Thursday 7 December in St Patrick’s Church, Pennyburn, Derry.
