Martial Arts Evening A Kicking Success
27th November 2006
Staff and students have been trying their skill in martial arts for the first time in an evening organised by the UU Sports Development Team.
As part of the ‘Try Sport’ element of the Northern Bank’s Sport 4 U programme, the Martial Arts Evening was run in partnership with the Ju Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do and Shotokan Karate Clubs at the Jordanstown campus.
The session was delivered to over 20 staff and students by fully qualified instructors who gave an insight into the different equipment that is needed to participate in the chosen disciplines as well as giving a detailed explanation of the different arts and where they originated.
After demonstrating some of the techniques used in each art, the participants were given an opportunity to try the sports for themselves.
Sports Development Assistant, Michael Ruddy, said that the event gave people the opportunity to see what martial arts are like first hand and allowed those who do not know the difference between each discipline to learn more about the sports.
“This event gave staff and students the opportunity to experience the different styles of martial arts that are operating within the University,” said Michael.
“Someone may wish to take up a martial art but are not sure which one. By taking part in the event, they were able to experience the three disciplines, enabling them to make an informed choice regarding which martial art would suit them best.”
The ‘Try Sport’ Martial Arts Evening proved to be a huge success and anyone interested in taking up a Martial Art within the University should contact Michael Ruddy on 028 903 68714 or email mj.ruddy@ulster.ac.uk.
