Irish President To Deliver Peace Lecture at UU

Irish President Mary McAleese is to deliver the latest in the University of Ulster’s Tip O’Neill Peace Lecture series.

The invitation-only event takes place at the University’s Magee campus on Monday 4th December.

President McAleese who visits at the invitation of Professor John Hume, holder of the Tip O’Neill Chair in Peace Studies at the University, will address the topic “ All Peace is Local”.

The Tip O’ Neill Chair, funded by the Ireland Funds, commemorates the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, who was well known for his support of the peace process in Northern Ireland.

President McAleese was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) by the University of Ulster in 2001.

Among the international statesmen and women to have delivered lectures in the series are former US President Bill Clinton, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern , President of the European Commission Romano Prodi, EU President Pat Cox, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald, US Senators John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, and Ambassador Mitchell Reiss.
