Local Government Leaders of The Future Choose UU

11th December 2006

The University of Ulster has developed a new leadership programme for high-flying executives in Northern Ireland’s emerging local government bodies, including the seven super-councils.

The Business Institute at the University has teamed up with the Local Government Staff Commission, Deloitte and Boston College to develop the course to help senior managers in local government meet the challenges which will flow from the Government’s Review of Public Administration (RPA).

Adrian Kerr, Chief Executive of the Local Government Staff Commission said: “The RPA will have a significant impact. Organisations will be larger, have more powers and bigger budgets but with no less accountability. Councils will more than ever have to work across boundaries and sectors and this will require new leadership approaches.”

Professor Jackie McCoy, Director of the Business Institute at the University of Ulster, agreed that this new initiative is timely: “We have joined forces with Deloitte and Boston College to offer a highly specialised programme which will groom senior managers in local government for the significant opportunities that are foreseeable as a result of the RPA.

“The programme leads to the award of the highly acclaimed MSc in Executive Leadership, which private sector organisations such as Microsoft, Diageo and AIB (UK) are using to support their senior executive development agendas.”
