UU Sports Scholar Wins Gold at Weightlifting Championships

University of Ulster Sports Scholar Neil Dougan has won the Northern Ireland Weightlifting Open and Divisional Championships.

The 21-year-old Bangor man won the gold medal in his class of 77 kilos.

The LLB Law with Economics student at, has performed progressively well over the past 12 months, picking up bronze at the European small nations championships, silver at the British Under 23 championships and finishing tenth at the World Student Games.  

Introduced to the sport of weightlifting by his father, Neil has been lifting for over four years. At his most recent success at the Northern Ireland championships, Neil lifted a total of 200 kilos altogether in two lifts, despite having a problem with his sciatica nerve in his back. 

Neil undertakes light technical work three days each week as part of his training at the moment, building up towards the British University Weightlifting Championships in Halifax in the Spring, where he will represent UU.
