Two University of Ulster lecturers have launched the first Belfast Bearduary as part of an international artistic celebration of beards.

Bearduary is a global event, which encourages the growth of beards during the months of January and February.

Christopher Murphy and Nicklas Persson, lecturers in Interactive Multimedia Design, have brought the quirky festival to Belfast for the first time this year, as interest in the event increases worldwide.

“Bearduary reflects a growing interest in the fine arts with the celebration of the everyday coupled with a renewed interest in gentlemanly pursuits,” explains Christopher.

“There is no question that this is part of a wider move within culture. It's no surprise that the Guardian's G2 section recently featured a five-page pull out entitled: The Return of The Beard.”

The Belfast launch of Bearduary, which took place at the University’s Belfast campus, featured a presentation on the history of beard and a quiz, Famous Gentlemen - Bearded or   Shaven?

The winner was second year IMD student Chris Rea who won vouchers for £100 of male grooming products.

Bearduary runs from 01 January until 02 March 2007. Places are limited but participants can sign up at: www.bearduarybelfast.com
