Creating Sustainable Childcare the Social Enterprise Way

26th February 2007

Experts  will next week examine how affordable, accessible and quality driven childcare can be provided in rural areas on both sides of the border.

Responding to the ongoing challenges facing the childcare sector both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the University of Ulster’s Knowledge Club, in partnership with Social Economy Solutions, has organised a seminar, entitled Sustainable Childcare on March 6 from 10am – 2pm in the Rural College and Derrynoid Centre in Draperstown.

The seminar will examine how the ongoing challenge for social economy childcare providers is to address the gaps in provision for rural communities while continuing to enhance and sustain the existing community childcare infrastructure.

Key speakers include Helen Seymour, Head of Projects and Development at Cooperatives UK, Mary McColgan (pictured) Head of the School of Sociology & Applied Social Studies at the University of Ulster and Patricia Mullan, Co-ordinator of Magherafelt Strategic Childcare project.

Kerry Thompson, UU’s Business Liaison Officer for the social economy said:  “This is a unique opportunity to bring social economy childcare providers from North and South together under one roof to discuss obstacles to development and share best practice solutions.  The University of Ulster is committed to supporting the growth and development of social enterprises throughout Northern Ireland and with Mary McColgan from UU as one of the key speakers, UU has an excellent opportunity to share its expertise. ”

Rita McGarvey, Development Advisor with Social Economy Solutions said: “Participants will be given an insight into childcare development on a cross border basis, the policy framework and funding structures operating in both jurisdictions.  This is an opportunity for all those working within the childcare sector to contribute to this timely discussion on sustainability and future development needs.”

The strategy for maximising growth and enhancing sustainability calls for mutual cooperation, partnership and a collaborative based approach between existing providers and statutory support agencies. Delegates will hear of calls for renewed investment by government, a commitment to capacity building and an emphasis on business development, focussing on growth opportunities in earned income and grant revenue streams.

This seminar will also focus on presenting best practice models and case studies within the childcare sector, disseminating information on the support framework being delivered by key agencies to build workforce and group capacity, discuss the challenges and opportunities for rural childcare providers and explore solutions to encourage future sustainability.
