UU Hosts Talk By Formula One Engineers.
18th April 2007
Engineers from two Formula One teams will be visiting the University of Ulster Jordanstown on the 19th April to meet students involved in this year’s Formula Student project, and to tour the facilities at the Engineering Composites Research Centre (ECRE) on the campus.
The centre is the leading research institute in 3-D woven carbon fibre performing.
Modern Grand-Prix Racing cars are constructed primarily from carbon fibre, using technology which was originally developed in the aerospace industry.
Researchers at ECRE are currently involved in work programmes with several leading aerospace manufacturers to develop lighter, stronger composites.
Carl Willoughby from Redbull racing and Ian Thomson from Super Aguri F1 will give a presentation entitled ‘Materials in Motorsport’ which will be hosted by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
This talk is open to the public and will be held at the Wellington Park Hotel at 6.00 pm on the 19th April. It will provide a valuable insight into aspects of material science and development within the leading edge world of Formula One Racing.
They will be joined by the Formula Student team from the University of Ulster who will launch the 2007 racing car and give a short presentation on the challenges involved in designing and building a racing car within the University.
All welcome.
