International Appointment for UU Academic

Dr. James Uhomoibhi of the Faculty of Engineering has been appointed Europe representative for the African Laser Centre (ALC).

The African LaserCentre, a virtual centre of excellence focusing on laser research in Africa, was established in 2002 to provide a platform through which Africa can pool its resources to become globally competitive. The Centre is an open, non-exclusive partnership aimed at stimulating innovative research and technology development in the field of lasers and laser applications.

The main responsibilities of Dr Uhomoibhi’s ALC office in Europe are to

  • Create awareness amongst African researchers in the diaspora about the objectives of the ALC
  • Identify opportunities for the ALC to involve researchers in the diaspora in the implementation of its various programmes
  • Assist in the creation of partnerships with similar institutions in Europe and the Americas
  • Link the ALC with funding/donor institutions in Europe and the Americas
  • Identify opportunities for joint workshops, conferences and study schools.

Dr Uhomoibhi said “I feel honoured to be appointed to this important position in Europe in service of my parent continent Africa. As we strive towards empowering and developing individual and societies in adiverse and now global stage, I see this as an opportunity to contribute towards technology and knowledge transfer in science, engineering and technology in Africa using lasers as the driving vehicle. Europe and especially African academics now living here have a lot to offer and I’ll be delighted to facilitate a process to make progress a reality in Africa”

Seaforde resident Dr Uhomoibhi is the Faculty of Engineering E-Learning Coordinator and is the University’s Representative on the Teaching and Researchin Engineering in Europe (TREE) network. He is the Chair of the European EUNISE-Learning Task Force (ELTF) futures and visions group.
