Lunchtime Jazz Concert Series

The University of Ulster’s Lunchtime Concert Series continues next week with performances by jazz trio Paul McIntyre on piano, Nick Scott on bass and Greg McCarthy on drums.  

The trio will perform their interpretations of some favorite jazz standards as well as improvised pieces from mainstream, hard bop and gospel genres. 

Paul Mcintyre is currently studying for a PhD in jazz performance at the University’s Magee campus.  He also received his undergraduate degree from the University of Ulster, along with an LTCL in piano teaching from Trinity College of Music in London.   

Son of the renowned saxophonist Gay McIntyre, Paul has continued in his father’s musical footsteps and has carved out a very successful career.  He has performed at numerous jazz festivals nationally and internationally, and is a regular at both the Cork and Derry annual jazz festivals. His trio has featured on live BBC radio programmes on many occasions, and he has accompanied world-renowned jazz singers and instrumentalists such as Jacqui Danqworth, Norma Winstone, Gay McIntyre, Louis Stewart and Michael Nielsen.   

During his twenty years as a bass player Nick Scott has established a distinguished international reputation playing with some of the major rock, pop and jazz artists on the music scene. 

He has recorded and performed live with a variety of artists from Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison, Brian Kennedy Johnny Mathis and Tom Jones, to Jackie Dankworth, Jean Toussaint and Howard Keel.  He has also toured in stage shows like Riverdance and West Side Story.  

Originally from Cork, Greg McCarthy is currently based in London.  A session and studio jazz drummer he has gigged and toured with John Faddis, Bobby Watson, Alan Barnes, Alan Skidmore, Louis Stewart and Spike Robinson.

The concerts will take place in the Octagon, at the Coleraine campus on Monday 05 November and in the Great Hall, Magee campus on Tuesday 06 November at 1.15pm.  Tickets, priced £3, are available on the door.
