Games Conference Hosted on Second Life Island

The University’s School of Computing and Intelligent Systems at Magee, broadcast its first conference live on Second Life – a virtual world populated by seven million users worldwide.
Its aim was to raise awareness and provide insight into the next generation of software development in producing computer games and exploring how to turn that into viable industry in Ireland.
The conference was broadcast live on the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems'/Intelligent Systems Research Centre’s (ISRC) Second Life Island, allowing users to watch and discuss proceedings in real time.Michael Callaghan, Second Life project leader at the Intelligent Systems Research Centre, Magee campus, said: “The simultaneous live broadcast of the conference proceeding in a collaborative virtual environment shows the flexibility and potential of this approach for use in an educational context.”
Accessing Second Life requires registration – which is free – and the download of client software to your computer from www.secondlife.com.Individuals may access the virtual campus by typing "University Ulster” in the map search feature of the Second Life client and teleporting or by using the Second Life slurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/University%20Ulster%20Magee/250/151/37.
