Teaching Teachers about Entrepreneurship

30th October 2007

From diesel fitter to delivering innovation and entrepreneurship education at university level – that is the unusual career path of Colin Jones (pictured), who is to be the guest speaker at a seminar at the University of Ulster on Friday, November 2.

Mr Jones, from the University of Tasmania, holds a number of distinguished teaching fellow awards. He will address the seminar – entitled “Teaching outside your comfort zone” - on delivering innovation and entrepreneurship education at university level and its relevance within diverse subject areas.

The workshop, which is a preview to Enterprise Week (November 12-16), is organised by the Northern Ireland Centre for Entrepreneurship (NICENT) and will be held in room W0010 at the Coleraine campus on Friday, November 2 at noon.

It will be of particular interest to educators, particularly those new to entrepreneurship, and those involved in curriculum development and courseplanning.

Mr Jones will also demonstrate his unique approach to the subject through an interactive workshop for students immediately after the seminar.

He joined the School of Management at the University of Tasmania in 2001 having previously been a small business operator, with extensive experience in the franchising of home services.

A late comer to the world of academia, he has owned and operated many service-related businesses. In the early eighties, Colin gained a trade qualification working as a diesel fitter. During the late 1980s he moved into the financial investments sector and later developed the VIP Home Services franchise group throughout Tasmania.

Along the way, experiencing many ups and downs, Colin also created and took to market a unique educational product, imported tractors for resale and worked as a business consultant in a diverse range of industries.
