University of Ulster physiotherapy students have been playing their part in the World Snooker Tournament (Northern Ireland Trophy), this week by offering physio services to the competitors.
The prestigious event, being held in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall, plays host to some of the biggest names in the sport including local snooker legend Joe Swail.
Dr Joe McVeigh, Course Director of the physiotherapy programme, University of Ulster, said: “Although snooker does not conjure up images of sports injuries, it can place fairly high demands on the lumbar and cervical spine. With some players practicing up to six or seven hours per day, the cumulative loading can be substantial when this continues year on year.
"Additionally physiotherapists play a role in optimising performance through analysis of movement and muscle function and the delivery of appropriate rehabilitation.”
“The event has given our students and recent graduates an understanding of the role of the physiotherapist at international sporting events as well as giving us the opportunity to showcase the quality of our students and graduates.”
