29th November 2007
Computing students from the University of Ulster’s Magee campus could make a difference to the world by entering the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition.
The Imagine Cup is a global software design and development competition that aims to encourage students to apply their imagination, passion and creativity to create high-tech innovative solutions that can make a difference in the world today. Now in its sixth year, the Imagine Cup has grown to become a truly global competition with a total prize fund in excess of $250,000 USD.
Students from the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems will take part in the national heat of the competition early next year and if successful will progress to the world finals in Paris in July 2008. There will be eight competition categories covering areas such as software design, embedded systems, game development and interface design.Dr Shane Wilson from the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems said: “The Imagine Cup presents students with an amazing opportunity to realise their visions and make a real difference to the world. The fact that Microsoft will support successful competition entries by providing the necessary software and hardware resources really allows students to think outside of the box and create highly innovate solutions.
Michael Callaghan, leader of the Serious Games and Virtual Worlds research team, Intelligent Systems Research Centre at Magee, added: “The Imagine Cup gives our students the opportunity to compete on a worldwide stage and showcase the skills and creativity available both in the School and the region as a whole.”
