News Release

Viennese Johann Strauss Gala

12th December 2007

The Ulster Orchestra will celebrate the New Year with the annual Viennese Concert at the University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus.

The Viennese Johann Strauss Gala recaptures the flair and style of Vienna during the second half of the 19th century when Strauss was the leading composer of dance music in Europe.  His music remains as popular today as it was then, when it earned him the title The Waltz King.

The programme for the evening will include a selection of the world’s most popular classical pieces by Strauss, Lehár, Suppé, Offenbach and more.  Perennial favourites such as Voices of Spring, Fledermaus Quadrille, and The Blue Danube will all be there.

The Orchestra will be performing with the outstanding Irish soprano Cara O’Sullivan under the baton of conductor Christopher Bell.Cara O'Sullivan is a multi award-winning soprano who has risen to prominence as one of Ireland's leading sopranos.  Her concert career and opera engagements have taken her all over the world.  An impressive and wide-ranging repertoire keeps her in demand all year round for Opera, oratorio, and song recitals across the globe.

Christopher Bell has worked with many of the major orchestras around the world. For the last five years he has conducted and presented Chicago’s Independence Eve concert.  His presentational style has made him a favourite conductor with audiences at Viennese Concerts in Northern Ireland.

The University of Ulster, Coleraine Borough Council and Causeway Coast Arts, who promote the Ulster Orchestra concerts in Coleraine, are delighted to thank firmus energy for their generous sponsorship of the Viennese Johann Strauss Gala.
