Step Up Students Take Flight

17th December 2007

The University of Ulster’s Step Up Programme in association with Bombardier Aerospace and the Science and Skills Programme ran a successful ‘Engineering in Flight’ day at W5 in Belfast.

As part of Step Up’s ongoing activities to engage young people in the study of science, pupils from Step Up’s partner schools experienced demonstrations and talks on a range of topics related to the aviation and aerospace industry.

Tony Monaghan, Bombardier Belfast’s Education Liaison Officer, said: “This was a packed session with Bombardier staff explaining how our C-Series Aircraft are designed to lower environmental impact. Dr Eddie Archer from the University of Ulster also talked about carbon fibre and composite construction and former pilot Kevin Loftus revealed just what the man in the front seat does.”

W5 also contributed to the day with demonstrations to explain the physics and engineering behind flight.

Step Up is a unique and innovative interventionist programme which provides new learning opportunities in science for talented young people, raising their aspirations expectations and academic performance, thereby enhancing their opportunities to progress to Higher Education.
