Senior Distinguished Research Fellowship: Professor Roger Marchant
Professor Marchant, who has been awarded a Senior Distinguished Research Fellowship, has made an outstanding contribution to research in the field of microbial biotechnology in a career spanning more than 42 years.
A native of Barnes, London, he began his career in 1965 as a young researcher in the Department of Botany at University College, London, following which he took up a post at the New University of Ulster in 1968, and subsequently the University of Ulster.
At the Coleraine campus he has held various senior posts including Head of Department of Biology and currently is Head of the Research Graduate School for the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences.
Professor Marchant’s initial research into the structure and biology of microorganisms, principally fungi, led in 1979 to the award of the degree of a higher doctorate, DSc, from the University of London.
He has published more than 169 peer-reviewed papers and has an impressive record of citations for these articles. Citations demonstrate that other scientists have found his work beneficial in developing their own hypotheses and designing experiments.
Over his career he has generated a total of £4.1 million in external research grant income including income from EU, industry and government. Of particular note is his positive engagement with industry.
