Distinguished Teaching Fellowship (Team Award)

19th December 2007

Over the past four years, a team led by Lecturer in Proteomics Dr Stephen McClean has sought to implement a number of new and innovative strategies to develop the undergraduate learning experience.

Underlying this approach was a rigorous analysis of the academic background of students entering the University, correlated with their performance in a first year introductory chemistry module.

This Team has sought to bring the fundamentals of chemistry to life using recognisable and relevant examples and in so doing introduce a level of enjoyment to lectures, large group activities, and demonstrations.

Teaching has been complemented with new online assessment strategies together with focused tutorials based on undergraduate programme groups. This virtual learning environment also allowed students access to learning material and module tools such as notice boards, discussion boards and communication via Internet, email and text messaging.

The Team has also recognised that chemistry is itself an important means of integrating the fundamentals of mathematics into programme provision – a core aspect of science, technology, engineering and mathematics teaching.

Team members:

Dr Stephen McClean, Team Leader, Lecturer
Dr Paul Hagan, Teaching Fellow
Dr David Ruddick, Lecturer
