Showcasing Innovation at Ulster

Professor Norman Black, PVC Research and Innovation presents an award to Professor Marlene Sinclair and Professor George Kernohan for their research into designer breast feeding
University of Ulster staff and students have been recognised for their outstanding achievements in innovation.
They were honoured at a showcase event organised by the Office of Innovation on the Jordanstown campus this week at which the most innovative, market-challenging, projects secured cash awards.
Competitions including the Cross Faculty Competition of Ideas, Pre Proof of Concept and Student Competition were designed to generate ideas among the student and academic communities.
Funding was made available to support the development of these ideas, which included novel business concepts and innovative technologies.
The projects receiving support ranged from a major breakthrough in the promotion and uptake of breast feeding to a novel method of preventing the spread of cancer.
Tim Brundle, Director of Innovation at Ulster said: “The Office of Innovation was delighted to celebrate success with our colleagues at the Innovation Awards.
“The event provided a wonderful opportunity for academics to both celebrate and discuss how these projects can be brought through commercialisation into the fabric of our daily lives.”
Funding for these awards was made available from the Higher Education Innovation Fund and the Research and Innovation Office.

Ulster has been supporting social enterprise for a number of years through the office of Innovation, offering academic expertise through mentoring, student placements and networking events.
The winner will be announced at a Gala Dinner at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast, on 29 May.
