Professor Fionnuala Ni Aolain, from the School of Law, has been appointed as an expert on the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force’s working group, Protecting Human Rights While Countering Terrorism.
The working group aims to support efforts to ensure human rights in the context of counter terrorism and recently met in Geneva for a four-day conference to examine the impact of terrorism and counter-terrorism measures on the enjoyment of economic, social, and cultural rights.
Professor Ni Aolain is Co-Director of the Transitional Justice Unit at Ulster and specialises in the fields of international law, human rights law, national security and feminist legal theory.
She was the first woman to be nominated by the Irish government to the European Court of Human Rights and is an elected member of the Joint Committee of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, and a member of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.
