Ulster Prepares to be ‘Sejuiced’
17th November 2008
An innovative female vocal trio called Juice will take up a post as Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Ulster this year.
The critically acclaimed group will make their first visit to Ulster’s Magee campus next week to present a packed programme of performances, workshops and outreach events.
They will also perform two public concerts on Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 November.
Juice specialise in presenting vibrant performances with a theatrical edge. At the forefront of the contemporary music scene, they have commissioned countless new works and have performed at the British Film Institute, the Royal Academy of Art, the Purcell Room and the Wigmore Hall.
Their eclectic repertoire draws on world music, jazz, folk and pop and often combines live singing with electronics and/or visuals.
Juice will perform a lunchtime concert in the Great Hall, Magee campus, at 1.15pm on Tuesday 25 November, featuring the Irish premiere of The Three Orphans by Laurence Roman, lecturer in music at the University of Ulster.
This will be followed by a second concert in the informal setting of Sandinos Bar, Derry, at 9pm on Wednesday 26 November. This will include a performance of 3 Glimpses by Adam Melvin, lecturer in popular music at Ulster and will also feature support by DEME, the in-house interdisciplinary arts collective from Ulster’s School of Creative Arts.
Adam Melvin said: “This residency will be an amazing opportunity for our student performers and composers to work closely with such technically accomplished and engaging performers.
“Juice is passionate advocates of interdisciplinary work and their performances feature everything from throat-singing to multimedia works with visuals. This desire to push boundaries coupled with their unquestionable virtuosity makes for a truly inspirational package.”
