Winning student Kathryn Massey with Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Barnett

Foundation Studies in Art and Design student, Kathryn Massey, is this year’s winner of the University of Ulster Christmas card design competition.

Kathryn beat off stiff competition from fellow students in the School of Art and Design with her winning idea entitled Winterland

The students were asked to translate the theme of Christmas in a myriad of ways including traditional, contemporary, religious and humorous.

The winning design, which was chosen by University of Ulster Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Barnett, will become the official university Christmas card for 2008.

Kathryn also received a cash prize of £250 presented by Professor Barnett at a special prize-giving ceremony on the Belfast campus

Dr Denise Gray, Director of Foundation Studies, said: “The students’ response to the Christmas card design competition was very positive and we had a huge number of entries. Their interpretation of the project brief was imaginative, with many of the students using a variety of techniques and processes which are indicative of the Foundation course in Art and Design.”

Runners up in the competition included Snowman by Niall Owens, Baubles by Ruth Dennison and Christmas Beacon of Hope by Hollie Patton.

All of the Christmas card designs can be accessed via the Ulster homepage at: http://ecards.ulster.ac.uk/cards/select/
