PricewaterhouseCoopers Backs New Ulster Degree

22nd June 2009

The University of Ulster has unveiled plans for a Masters course that could help put students on a path to careers in higher management.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Northern Ireland is throwing its weight behind the new MSc Applied Management degree, with practical ongoing support and a scholarship competition worth £5,000 to the winner.

Participants in the written competition will analyse a business case problem and recommend the best solutions, and they will also be asked for their reasons for seeking the scholarship.

Economist and journalist John Simpson will chair the selection panel.

The course is open to graduates and non-graduates alike. It is likely to have a special appeal to people working in industry who may not have a primary degree but who will receive course-entry recognition based on their practical experience.

The programme will offer not only the MSc accreditation, but also the opportunity to gain the PRINCE2 practitioner’s qualification, the project management qualification which is recognised worldwide.

Taken one year full-time or two years part-time, the degree will be based fully on coursework. The proposed course has already prompted a number of applications from students in India.

The programme will focus on an applied approach to management, giving students the opportunity to work in a number of different companies in Northern Ireland.

Students will gain hands-on experience covering a number of management disciplines for the benefit of their respective industry sectors.

Senior managers from a variety of business settings will act as mentors and PwC will deliver a module on Project Management, through locally held residentials.

Students will also spend up to a week in Germany, at the University of Kempten and at BMW and Mercedes Benz plants learning about their approach to management disciplines.

Dr Norry McBride, Course Director of the new programme, says: “The Department of Business, Retail and Financial Services at the University of Ulster are delighted to announce the launch of their new MSc Applied Management degree programme which will commence in September 2009.

“It has been designed in collaboration with representatives from local industry, including the private, public sectors, as well as the social economy.

“This is a highly innovative and diverse course which will allow students to study at the University of Kempten in Germany, in association with German industry.

“We are particularly pleased about the contribution that the PwC team will make in the delivery of their project management module.  The offer of a PwC scholarship adds further prestige to the programme which will be an additional distinctive mark of success for the person who wins it.”

Bob McCullagh, partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers, added: “PwC are very pleased to be associated with the MSc in Applied Management. The programme responds to a need to develop capable managers for our businesses, to help ensure that they are competitive in local and world markets in the future.”
