Ulster Students Shine a Light on Belfast Exhibition

First year students Peter Grahame and Uisneagh McCollum showcase their designs at Ulster's Belfast campus
Creative University of Ulster students have brightened up the Belfast campus this week with an exhibition highlighting the subtle interplay of light.
First-year Fashion and Textile students have teamed up with 3D Design students to showcase a range of models made from paper, fabric and plastic. The exhibition, which is being displayed on the glass link bridge in Ulster’s Belfast campus this week, is the culmination of three weeks of intensive lectures, workshops and seminars run collaboratively between lecturers in the School of Art and Design and the School of Architecture and Design.
Noreen Conwell-Kerr, lecturer in Textiles and Fashion in the School of Art and Design, said: “The main aim of this project was to increase student awareness, opportunity and confidence through engaging in cross discipline workshop-based activities. This dynamic three-week initiative has provided a very positive start for level one students beginning their first year of Art and Design studies.”First-year Fashion and Textile student, Katherine Mason, added: “Our brief was to explore light modulation and observe how light reacts through manipulating paper, fabrics and plastic to create interesting constructs culminating in shadow and light effects.
"This has been a wonderful project as it has given us the opportunity to work with students from other disciplines and taught us to challenge traditional design concepts and ideas."It has been an intense first three weeks of term – but it has been worth it to finally see the exhibition come together and be displayed in the Belfast campus.”
The Interplay of Light exhibition will be on display in the glass link bridge at Ulster’s Belfast campus from 19 – 24 October 2009.Ulster staff involved in the Art, Design and Built Environment Scholarship Award for Teaching and Learning include: Noreen Conwell-Kerr, Mo Morrow, Lorraine Cunningham, Lucy McMullen and Duncan Neil from the School of Art and Design and Depak Kaushal, Adrienna Ionascu and Heather Shanks-Millar from the School of Architecture and Design.
