Sport Scholar Takes National Title

30th November 2009

University of Ulster Sports Scholar Carol Duffy has won an all-Ireland title at the Amateur Karate Championships in Dublin.

Carol, who is from Newry, took first place in the Kata team event, which is the non-combat element of the sport and examines the technical disciplines of karate.

The second year Sport and Exercise Sciences student added to this by notching up a silver medal in the Senior Female event, bronze in the Kyu Kata event, and another silver in the Senior Female Under 55kg Kumite, or sparring, event.

This success built upon further triumph from the previous weekend, when she picked up a bronze at the English National Championships.

She said: “I’m very pleased with the performance because the standard over the last year has increased so much, with more competitors from the national squad taking part, it’s almost like an international competition in itself. I’ve also taken the step up to competing on the senior level so I’m happy with how I’ve performed.”

Carol’s achievement has capped a successful time of late for Ulster’s sports stars. In recent weeks, the men’s volleyball team picked up the all-Ireland intervarsity trophy and Sports Scholar Darragh Daly lead the Jordanstown campus’s handball team to victory in the all-Ireland intervarsity.

The handball squad now turn their attentions to the global stage in preparations for the World Collegiate Championships in Arizona in February.
