Jordanstown Topple QUB In Sigerson Battle

4th February 2010

The University of Ulster’s Jordanstown Gaelic footballers notched up a one point win over QUB yesterday to send them through to the quarter-final of the Ulster Bank HE Sigerson Cup.

Armagh’s Jamie Clarke secured the 1-13 to 2-9 win for Jordanstown with a point two minutes from time.

It was far from plain sailing for Adrian McGuickin’s side, who had to overturn a 0-5 to 1-7 half time deficit to advance to the last eight, where they will play NUI Maynooth on 17 February.

Conor McManus top scored for Jordanstown with seven points. Colm Cavanagh, Enda Kenny, Ciaran McGinley, all got on the score sheet with Clarke notching up total of 1-2.

Dr Nigel Dobson, Co-Director of the Ulster Sports Academy, said: “The win for the Jordanstown footballers is a great achievement and I would like to congratulate them on a the victory. The next step for the team is to carry this great performance through the campaign and keep the momentum going over the next few games and hopefully go on to lift the title, just as they did in 2008.

“The University of Ulster is committed to becoming the leading third level institution for sport on the island of Ireland, and performances like the Jordanstown footballers have just put in show the commitment all our sports clubs have to reaching this goal.”

There was further success for Ulster’s Gaelic footballers yesterday, with the Coleraine campus recording a 1-11 to 2-06 win over the National College of Ireland in the first round of the Trench Cup.
