Chamber Music at Magee

16th March 2010

The Szgeti Quartet

The Szgeti Quartet make a welcome return to Magee campus this week as part of the chamber concert series presented by the Friends of the Ulster Orchestra in association with the University of Ulster.

The Quartet, composed of young members of the Ulster Orchestra,  will perform Barber’s String Quartet, Op. 1, including the universally loved ‘Adagio for Strings’ and Beethoven’s magnificent ‘Harp’ Quartet.

They will also be joined by the Orchestra’s Paul Klein for a performance of Mozart’s Horn Quintet, K.407.

John Parr, Chairman of the Friends of the Ulster Orchestra, said: “The Szgeti Quartet is a group of very fine and also adventurous string players.  The works they perform are all great pieces of music which can be immediately enjoyed but which for the most part are comparatively little known. Whilst every music lover will know Samuel Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ - one of the most performed works of the twentieth century - the quartet is hardly ever performed as a whole. Similarly, the Mozart Horn Quintet is seldom played because of the exceptionally difficult solo part, although the music itself is instantly attractive.”

Niamh Pearce, Cultural Development Officer at Magee added: “We are delighted with the ongoing success of this jointly promoted series and greatly look forward to welcoming the Szgeti Quartet back to Magee.”

The concert will take place in the Great Hall, Magee, at 8pm on Sunday 21st March.

Tickets cost £8 and £6 concession and may be booked in advance or purchased at the door. For further information or to book tickets contact the Cultural Development Office at the Magee campus on: 028 7137 5456.
